Current Status of Grok Memory Feature in OpenClaw (February 2026)

Memory has consistently been one of the biggest bottlenecks for AI agents running locally. Throughout late 2025 and early 2026, both OpenClaw and xAI's Grok have made massive strides in persistent context features. With the recent integration of Grok into OpenClaw as a web search provider, how do these memory systems interact today?

The State of OpenClaw's Memory

Following the recent 1 Million Token context window update (v2026.2.17), OpenClaw drastically reduced the frequency of context overflow errors. However, massive context windows aren't the same as persistent memory.

To solve actual long-term recall, OpenClaw introduced the opt-in QMD memory backend plugin. This system allows the agent to build a vector-based database of user facts, creative preferences (via the internally named "Aesthetic Core"), and ongoing project details. Unlike relying purely on prompt history, QMD ensures that context survives server reboots and can even be exported and imported between different OpenClaw major versions.

Grok's Persistent Memory

On the other side of the equation, xAI has been refining Grok's memory capabilities since mid-2025. Grok can retain user preferences, work details, and conversational style across independent chat sessions.

Note on Availability: It's important to remember that due to stringent data regulations, Grok's native persistent memory feature is currently disabled for users in the European Union and the United Kingdom. Users control this feature directly via the "Data Controls" settings in their Grok portal.

How They Work Together (As of February 2026)

With the February updates, OpenClaw officially added support for Grok as a primary web search provider via xAI. This integration creates a fascinating dynamic:

  • Real-Time Augmentation: OpenClaw utilizes Grok's live access to the X (formerly Twitter) platform and general web context.
  • Two-Tiered Context: Your OpenClaw instance manages the local, private, vector-based memory of your specific tasks and personal data (via QMD) across multiple language. Recently, OpenClaw added native memory embedding support for Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic.
  • Delegation: When OpenClaw queries Grok, it does not pass your entire local QMD database to xAI. It passes only the necessary search context. Grok utilizes its own memory of your previous API interactions (if enabled in your region) to shape the live data it returns to the agent.

Upcoming Grok-5 Integration

As of late February, rumors heavily suggest that xAI is currently training the Grok-5 model, which is expected to feature "dynamic integrated memory and continual learning". Given the speed of the OpenClaw development cycle, we expect to see deep hooks for Grok-5's advanced memory pipeline implemented into OpenClaw shortly after the model's official release.

Configuring The Setup

To get the most out of this setup, ensure your OpenClaw agent is running at least version 2026.2.19 or higher to benefit from the latest security patches regarding third-party API trust boundaries.

Inside your `open.js` configuration, set xAI as your default `web_search.provider`. For the best memory retention regarding your local files, ensure the QMD backend is toggled to `true` and you are utilizing a compatible embedding model (Mistral or Voyage AI are currently top recommendations inside the community).
